I feel like digital pianos have come a long way in the recent years. Is this really the case? Can’t I get a higher end digital and still become a good advanced pianist (as a hobby, mind you I don’t want to become a concert pianist whatsoever)? Or will a digital stunt all my progress and keep me at my current late intermediate level, even set me back? Is classical music only meant to be played on acoustic pianos, or can you come close enough on a digital piano? My problem is (tl dr) - I’ve seen a lot of people say that a pianist that wants to become really good must own an acoustic piano, or that a digital piano will never compare or even come close to a really good acoustic.

I feel like I would rather invest in a higher end digital/hybrid piano (the Kawai CA series seems the most appealing to me) than get another acoustic, because I live in a really humid climate and it’s difficult for me to control this and I also live in a building with neighbours above me, which restricts my ability to play during certain hours.

However, as I progressed considerably in these 4 years, I feel like I need an upgrade in the upcoming future. Prior to that, I had an entry-level Hemingway digital piano which was way worse, so transitioning to my current acoustic was, at the time, a huge milestone for me. Therefore, with this in mind, I bought my first acoustic piano 4 years ago - a low-end Scandinavian Nordiska piano that’s about 30-35 years old and is definitely not a great upright (the keyboard and pedal are not very sensitive or responsive, the action does not allow that many dynamics at all, the tuning pins are rusty, it’s a ‘cheap’ piano overall). I’ve been taking piano classes for almost 10 years now on the side of my education, just as a hobby, but at this point I know things are serious and I will be doing this for a long time.
